Stained and Ruined

Melissa Taylor

"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)

Devotion:
Looking back, it seems like I'm viewing the story of another person. I hardly recognize the little girl I became in that dark moment.

I was walking home from the bus stop. The walk took about ten minutes unless I stopped to talk to a friend or neighbor, which I usually did. Mr. Parks, a retired man, was sitting in his driveway waving to all the kids walking by. He was so friendly. On this particular day, he invited me into his garage. He said he had some candy to give me.

I walked in that garage an innocent trusting little girl. I walked out scarred for life.

Hidden Treasure

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Matthew 13:44
Treasures are precious things which are not common. Only few people found them, and such people are considered lucky in life. Treasures have values of varying grades. Men fight wars, and search diligently to get treasures but soon lost them to robbers, death and others things stronger than them.

The treasure of man comes at a high cost, and does not last, but the treasure of God lasts for ever, and it comes free. Man searches for treasure, but God is looking for man to deliver His treasure to him.

Hidden Treasure

LEONARD DAVIDSON
Garage Sale
Someone once said, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” Or woman’s in my wife’s case. She loves yard sales—a lot. On Saturday mornings, when I should be allowed to sleep in, she wakes me up at dawn. She is already dressed and has the newspaper spread out on the counter. The classified section is open, and the page is covered with bright yellow circles.

Those circles lay out the destiny for my “morning off.” They’re all the yard sales that seem to show promise of a treasure. Beside each yellow circle is a red number. You guessed it; the numbers map out the order in which we are going to travel from yard sale to yard sale.

Finding Treasures

Written by Gail Rodgers

Are your days filled with loneliness?  Do you dread getting up and facing another day? Come talk to a mentor.
“[I]f you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:3-5)
Time just seems to stand still when I am with my two grandboys! All the cares I have simply vanish when I am playing pretend with an imaginative, delightful three year old, or getting warm cuddles and ready smiles from the sweetest little baby!
Yesterday they came over and I was a ready participant when Logan said, “Let’s have an adventure, Gramma!” We put on our warm hoodies and went outside to explore the back yard. We were hunting for treasures and treasures we found!

Hidden Treasures in the Philippines

Is it true that caches of treasures–notably, Yamashita treasures– are buried in secret places in the Philippines? How did they get there in the first place? Treasure hunting in the country is accompanied by numerous Philippine myths or tales on them—from word of mouth and some even from the news.
Treasure hunting takes place in the country now and then, more so for the Yamashita treasures. Lots were illegal. Philippine legends say treasures are said to come from two sources—the Second World War and the unseen supernatural world.
According to a Philippine myth, Hitler tied up with Italy and Japan, worrying the Allied Forces about Vatican treasures that might fall in The Fuehrer’s hands. They were said to have secretly smuggled out some treasures and kept in England. But Hitler was gaining more ground faster than expected. So they were shipped out to Hongkong. But the Japanese intercepted it and diverted it to Australia.
But a super typhoon destroyed the Japanese fleet and the treasures ended up somewhere between the Visayas and Mindanao. That’s how it came to the Philippines, says a Philippine legend.
The treasures were gradually transported to Manila, says the myth, and portions were stashed away in remote mountains, caves, old churches, old monuments, old trees, or underground.
Then Americans came to free Manila forcing General Yamashita to divide his forces, each carrying enormous amounts of treasures. Some headed north, some to provinces around Manila. Filipino slaves were said to have carried the bulk of the treasures and did lots of the digging, says Philippine legends about them.
The Filipinos were later killed, along with scores of Japanese soldiers, to ensure the treasures’ secrecy. Later, According to the Philippine myth, ranking Japanese soldiers reportedly returned to the country as tourists after the war and recovered a lot of the treasure—again with the help of Filipinos.
Souls of those killed in the course of treasure hiding are said to be guarding them. So ghost stories accompany tales of the Yamashita treasures. They say, where ghosts of Japanese soldiers abound; there a treasure might be hidden. Tales of white ladies are also connected to treasures, more of the Yamashita treasures, according to Philippine myths-—they were rape victims of Japanese soldiers.
The local version of fairy tales has its own story. Local, flat-nosed nymphs, fairies, leprechauns, gnomes, and the like are said to be spirit guardians of unimaginable hoards of wealth—fact is, the tales say, Filipinos are sitting on a mountain of gold. And these are not just natural resources; they are literally treasures of gold.
Philippine myths or legends of treasures never die. They’re taken seriously even by respectable people. And who knows? They might indeed be real, and those of us who laugh at these tales might one day discover too late that the joke was on us.

Treasure, Treasurer, Treasury - In The Old Testament

I. In the Old Testament.

1. Treasure

The English word "treasure" has in the Old Testament at least five somewhat distinct meanings as expressed in the words: "treasure," genaz (Aramaic) or genez (Hebrew), usually meaning "the thing stored"; translated "treasures" in Ezra 6:1, but in 5:17 and 7:20 translated "treasure-house": "search made in the king's treasure-house." In Esther 3:9Esther 4:7 the Hebrew form is translated "treasury," as is ganzakh in 1 Chronicles 28:11.

2. Storehouse:

"Storehouse," not the thing stored but the place of storage; 'otsar means depository, cellar, garner, armory, store or treasure-house. In several places it ought to be translated by some of these words. It is the most frequent word for treasure. the English Revised Version and the American Standard Revised Version both translate in some instances by other words, e.g. 1 Kings 7:51, "treasuries of the house of Yahweh," so also 2 Chronicles 5:1; "treasury" in Nehemiah 7:70, 71, "gave to the treasury a thousand darics of gold"; in Job 38:22, "treasuries of the snow" (compare Proverbs 8:21 Jeremiah 10:13Jeremiah 51:16 Ezra 2:69).

3. Hidden Riches:

"Treasure" or something concealed. There are 3 Hebrew words with this meaning and all in the King James Version translated "treasure." (1) Matmon, which literally means "a secret storehouse" and so a secreted valuable, usually money buried, and so hidden riches of any kind, hid treasures: "treasure in your sacks" (Genesis 43:23); "dig for it more than for hid treasures" (Job 3:21); "search for her as for hid treasures" (Proverbs 2:4); "We have stores hidden in the field, of wheat," etc. (Jeremiah 41:8). (2) Mikhman, treasure as hidden, used only in Daniel 11:43: "have power over the treasures of gold and silver." (3) Saphan, meaning hidden treasure or valuables concealed: "hidden treasures of the sand" (Deuteronomy 33:19).

4. Strength:

Perhaps the strength of riches and so treasure, the Hebrew word being chocen, from a root meaning to hoard or lay up: "In the house of the righteous is much treasure" (Proverbs 15:6); "They take treasure and precious things" (Ezekiel 22:25).

5. Something Prepared:

"Something prepared," made ready, the Hebrew word being `athudh, meaning "prepared," "ready," therefore something of value and so treasure: "have robbed their treasures," fortifications or other things "made ready" (Isaiah 10:13).

In the Old Testament the Hebrew word most often translated "treasure" is 'otsar. It occurs in the sing. as follows: Deuteronomy 28:12 1 Chronicles 29:8Nehemiah 10:38 Psalm 17:14Psalm 135:4 Proverbs 15:16Proverbs 21:20 Ecclesiastes 2:8 Isaiah 33:6Daniel 1:2 Hosea 13:15; in the pl.: Deuteronomy 32:34 1 Kings 14:261 Kings 15:182 Kings 12:182 Kings 14:142 Kings 16:82 Kings 18:152 Kings 20:13, 15; 24:13, etc.

The same word is in the King James Version translated "treasuries" in 1 Chronicles 9:261 Chronicles 28:12 2 Chronicles 32:27Nehemiah 13:12, 13 Psalm 135:7; and "treasury" in Joshua 6:19, 24 Jeremiah 38:11.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia

Treasures Of Wisdom And Knowledge.

Colossians 2:3 New International Version

1I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally.
2My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,
3in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.
5For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. This may be understood either of the mystery of the Gospel, which contains the rich mines and hidden treasures of all divine truths; so called, because of the richness and intrinsic value and excellency of them; and because of their variety and abundance, being the unsearchable riches of Christ: or of Christ himself; and not so much of his personal wisdom, either as God, being the all-wise God, the wisdom of God, an omniscient Being, that knows all persons and things whatever, within the whole circle of wisdom and knowledge; or as man, whose wisdom and knowledge, though created, was very large and abundant; or as Mediator, on whom the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and of knowledge, rests; but of that fulness of truth as well as grace, which dwells in him as in its subject and fountain; by whom it comes, and from whom it is derived unto us; and our highest wisdom and knowledge lies in knowing him, whom to know is life eternal; and the excellency of whose knowledge surpasses everything else; it is the greatest riches, and most valuable treasure; nor is there anything worth knowing but what is in Christ, all is laid up in him: and being said to be "hid" in him, shows the excellency of the wisdom and knowledge that is in him only valuable things being hid, or compared to hid treasure; that this cannot be had without knowing him; that it is imperfect in the present state, and is not yet fully and clearly revealed; and therefore should be inquired after, and searched for, and Christ should be applied unto for it.

Treasures: Secret Or Dark Sayings

By Keith H Hepworth  Part of web site  biblesecrets.org

A noteworthy example of  secret or "dark sayings" is the following words of Isaiah, which seem to say one thing yet mean quite another:

"And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen,
and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine:
let us eat and drink;  for to morrow we shall die" (Isa. 22:13).

Most people see only pessimism and failure in this verse, thinking it means there is no chance to be right with God and so we might as well throw in the towel and quit trying.  Actually, this verse is quite optimistic and refers to the Third Principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is baptism. It means that a feast should be prepared, that we should kill the fattened calf and eat and drink and be merry, celebrating in joy and gladness because tomorrow we shall be BAPTIZED; that is, tomorrow we will symbolically die, buried in the waters of baptism, which will bring a spiritual rebirth. The verses just before and after confirm this interpretation. The verse before talks about the steps leading up to baptism, which are grieving over our sins, repentance, and humility.  The verse after points out the reason for baptism: "Surely this [your] iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die" (till ye are baptized).  After all, does our literal death purge our iniquities in the eyes of God, or does our repentance and baptism? Our sins are not shed like dirty clothes when we die. If we are filthy WITH SINS when we die, we will still be filthy there, but "there" will not be in a righteous kingdom with a righteous Father in Heaven.  Our sins are only forgiven through and by repentance and the ordinance of baptism ("the gate")--followed up by continual improvement and additional repentance (the narrow way).  In this way, God's grace cleanses us step-by-step on our climb to perfection.  Otherwise, if God's grace were granted willy-nilly, requiring no repentance and the forsaking of our sins, it would rob justice, which simply cannot be.  Our baptism must be done either now or later vicariously by someone else on earth in our behalf--  "Else. . . why then are they  baptized for the dead?"(1 Cor. 11:29).  When you know these verses contain these deeper meanings, that they are talking about baptism and rebirth instead of giving up to Satan in a last wild fling, the whole chapter can be read with the same positive view. It's not real easy but can be done (see Isaiah commentary for full explanation). Hidden TREASURES  (see text box) like this are abundant in the scriptures, and the Lord has promised to reveal them to us if we will search diligently.http://www.biblesecrets.org/first_principles.htm
