Ford introduces inflatable rear seat belts

Ford has further raised the bar on vehicle safety with the introduction of the world’s first inflatable second-row seat belts into the Philippine market.

The inflatable seat belts are designed to deploy over a passenger’s torso and shoulder within 40 milliseconds of a crash. With rear seat passengers being more vulnerable to head, chest and neck injuries in a car crash, Ford’s engineers designed the advanced restraint system to help reduce such injuries.

Each belt’s tubular airbag inflates with cold compressed gas, which flows through a specially-designed buckle from a cylinder below the seat. In the event of a frontal or side crash, the inflatable belt’s increased diameter can better hold the occupant in a proper seating position that would reduce the risk of injury.
