Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
-- James 1:19
One of the biggest lessons to learn in life is to know when you need to be quiet and when you need to speak up. For instance, if someone over you in authority is trying to tell you something, that's a time for you to be quiet and listen to what the authority is attempting to tell you. In order to really hear what he or she is trying to communicate, you have to stop talking! Listening and talking at the same time almost always guarantees that you are going to miss important facts and details.
In James 1:19, the Bible says, "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." The word "swift" in this verse is the Greek word tachus. It can be used to depict a runner who runs as fast as he can so he can reach the finish line before his competitors. Because this runner fiercely wants to win the race, he puts everything else out of his mind, focuses on the finish line, and then presses forward to obtain the first-place prize.

Your Heavenly Cheering Squad
by Rick Warren
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge
crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that
slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run
with endurance the race God has set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1 NLT)
Home field advantage can mean
everything in sports. Teams who are at home often have a far better record than
those on the road. When a team has someone cheering them on, they can often
outplay their ability.
The Bible says that you, too, have an
audience cheering you on. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are
surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip
off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us
up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us” (NLT).
Nothing you do is private. You have
an audience. Heaven is watching. But, more importantly, you have a cheering
section. The Bible says that everyone in Heaven is cheering you on.
You probably realize that God knows
everything. The Bible says “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the
whole earth” (2 Chronicles 16:9 KJV). The Lord doesn’t miss a thing. He knows
your ups and your downs — your everything. He knows every thought you have.

Never to Late to Get Back on Track
Written by Barbara Alpert
“[L]et us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
Multitudes of people make a resolution to change at the beginning of the year. Most have every good intention to correct the problem, but many give up by February, if not sooner. Here we are in March. Think back on your own resolutions, are any of them still going strong?
As followers of Christ, often we too set out to renounce particular habits and behaviors, along with solemn promises to embark a more dedicated walk with the Lord. We might pledge to read our Bibles and pray on a daily basis, to faithfully attend church and tithe or to serve in an outreach. However, just like the majority of people who break their New Year’s resolutions, we too may have fallen off track, abandoning our commitment and forfeiting the victory we earnestly desired.
