Divine Healing (Intro to Lessons)

There are heresies in the church today, such as the dispensational teaching that miracles and divine healing came to an end in the first century. Multitudes have come under the influence of “deceiving spirits and things taught by demons” as Paul prophesied (1 Tim 4:1). The prince of darkness Satan has beguiled entire denominations to believe healing is not part of the gospel of the kingdom preached by Jesus, despite the fact that pardon of sins and healing are united in the teachings of Christ and apostles. But unclean spirits of doubt and unbelief have deceived many that health of the body is not a fruit of salvation.

Jesus never suggested a sick person should resign himself to illness. Misguided doctrines have strayed from the fullness of the gospel, neglecting to emphasize that “the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 Jn 3:8). Even a casual reading of the gospels and book of Acts in absence of false indoctrination will leave readers clear as to the charge given the church Jesus left behind regarding divine healing. If these lessons do not clarify the matter, I’d simply ask you to be good Bereans and search the Scriptures for yourself instead of reading commentaries written by others.

How To Be Healed

"That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses" (Matt. 8:17).

"Surely he hat borne our griefs [*diseases], and carried our sorrows [*pains]" (Isa. 53:4).

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live onto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed" (1 Peter 2:24).

I have a twofold purpose in this lesson:
1. To establish the scriptural fact that divine healing for our physical body belongs to us, and to help those who need healing get healed. 
2. To help those who have been healed stay healed, because it is one thing to receive something from God and another thing to maintain it.

Members of His Body

"I have found an atonement" (Job 33:24, margin).

Divine healing is just divine life. It is the headship of Christ over the body. It is the life of Christ in the frame. It is the union of our members with the very body of Christ and the inflowing life of Christ in our living members. It is as real as His risen and glorified body. It is as reasonable as the fact that He was raised from the dead and is a living Man with a true body and a rational soul today at God's right hand.

That living Christ belongs to us in all His attributes and powers. We are members of His body, His flesh and His bones, and if we can only believe and receive it, we may live upon the very life of the Son of God. Lord, help me to know "the Lord for the body and the body for the Lord.'

Divine Healing

Divine healing is part of the redemption provision of the cross. For sin, God provides forgiveness, for death, He provides eternal life; and for disease, He provides healing.  When we confess salvation, we also confess healing. Jesus healed all who came to Him for healing during His earthly ministry (Matt. 4:24; Mark 6:56: Luke 16:19; 9:11). Importantly, healing was a normal part of Jesus’ declaration of the Kingdom, and of His ministry. In Luke 4: 18-19 He proclaimed:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Jesus Christ Does Want to Heal You

If all of the above verses are showing us that it was the will of God the Father to want to heal His chosen people back in the Old Testament – then the next set of verses will be showing us that it was also the will of Jesus Christ to heal when He was walking in the New Testament.

If God the Father was constantly healing His people back in the Old Testament when they were walking right with Him – then it should come as no surprise that His Son Jesus will be wanting to do the exact same thing as He was walking among us in the New Testament. And that is exactly what you will find. Jesus was constantly healing people that came to Him, especially when they came to Him with enough faith and belief that He could actually heal them.

Here are 11 key Scripture verses showing how active Jesus really was in the area of divine healing when He was walking with the full power of God for about three and half years.

God the Father Does Want to Heal You

All of the above verses are definitely showing us that not only does God the Father have the personality attributes to want to heal us, but that He also has the full divine power to actually be able to heal us – no matter how severe the sickness or illness may be. However, will He actually do it if you properly approach Him in your prayers?

These next set of verses will show you that not only does God actually want to heal us – but that He can and will heal us if certain conditions are met. Not only does the Bible give us knowledge and information on the personality attributes of God and Jesus, but it also shows us how many times in the past God and Jesus have actually healed other people.

Once you read how many times God and Jesus were healing other people back in both the Old and New Testaments, then this will help build up your own faith and belief that just maybe God and Jesus can also do the exact same thing for you.

Possessing the Promise of Healing

Divine healing is an accomplished fact. It is a gift, like salvation, already paid for at Calvary. Have you accepted God’s gift of healing? Are you experiencing it in your life in full? If not, it’s time for you to possess the promise of healing and enjoy complete health in every area!

“I have prayed and prayed. I have been in healing meetings all over the country and have been prayed for many times, but still I am not healed. Can you help me?”

This plaintive appeal has been heard many times by ministers. They pray for sick persons, but often the sick leave as they came—not healed.

God Heals

All healing is, in some way, divine healing, spiritual healing, perhaps even a 'miracle' healing. We can speak of 'natural' processes for healing, but who created nature? Who set its rules, gave it its direction? God, of course. So when body tissue repairs itself and the immune system works, it is doing what God intended it to do. We can also speak of Me' medical' healing or cure (Gk. therapeuô). But medicine is rooted in the understanding of how nature works. It gives a boost to the systems for healing that we already have within us, clearing away roadblocks to restoring health, and does some things that nature does not have the ability to do on its own. Medicine itself has no ultimate healing power.All medicine can do at its very best is to delay death's inevitable arrival. Even medicine's ability to delay death is a great gift from God. The Holy Spirit is, according to the Nicene Creed, the Giver of life. The Spirit is also the sustainer of life, the breath you keep drawing in as long as you're alive. Just as the Spirit can heal your soul, the Spirit can work within you to heal your body.

The kind of healing that the Bible talks about also takes place today in our day and time. It is real. It's in the toolbox that the Spirit has given Christ's followers. As we do with many of those tools, we try to be in control, to manipulate people using faith healing, or to fake it in order to become famous. That is the human way. The real gift may be hard to find because so many are claiming to do it.

In today's world, many people turn to spiritual healing ministries and faith healers for many of the same reasons they use for turning to alternative medicine, unusual therapies, and New Age spiritual healing:
spiritual hunger;
meaning in life;
direction for life.

It's best to address these needs without letting them overwhelm the healing task at hand. A true congregational healing ministry is not a psychiatrist's couch or a medical practice or a weekend with a guru. It is neither modern therapy nor another way of saying 'salvation', though it is related to both. A congregation's task for health has a different task. It must not try to imitate them.

Faith healing is not there to replace medicine or the body's healing processes. But Western civilization has gotten even most Christians to look to medical science as their only source of healing. When the Bible speaks of healing, it is speaking of God's stepping in to bring about healing by divine power rather than just medicine. The natural processes obey God's command rather than operate as they normally do. What we call 'miracles' are simply the loving response of the One who's already driving those processes. Thus, the Christian's prayer is not just that the ill be comforted, but that they may be made whole inside and out. When that wholeness occurs, whether miraculous or not, we are not to ask what we did right, but to ask what God is up to.

Purposes for Divine Healing

The late English Bible teacher Smith Wigglesworth used to tell this story: Two women on the train with him—a mother and daughter—were very sick, so Wigglesworth said to them, “Look, I've something in the bag that will cure every case in the world. It has never been known to fail.”

The mother and daughter were quite interested, so the minister went on to tell them about his “remedy.” When they finally asked for a dose, he opened the bag, took out his Bible, and read them the verse that says, “I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26).

What a wonderful way to share how the Bible is filled with promises and accounts regarding health and healing for His children!

Is It Biblical to Believe for Healing?

The foundation for our belief in divine healing begins with the study of salvation. Our salvation through Christ Jesus is sufficient to redeem us from both the nature and curse of sin (Romans 5:12; Galatians 3:13-14; Deuteronomy 28:15-68).

The Scriptures reveal that we have been given a great salvation (Hebrews 2:3-4). C.I. Scofield gave this Biblical definition of salvation. “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the gospel, gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes: as justification, redemption, grace, propitiation, imputation, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification.”

Gloria Copeland has taught about the connection between the Greek word for salvation soteria and the Hebrew wordshalom or “peace.” The word shalom means “completeness, wholeness, peace, health, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, absence of agitation or discord, to be complete, perfect and full.”

This covenant of salvation and peace that we have received through Christ Jesus provides complete wholeness with “nothing missing, nothing broken.” Isaiah 53:5 said the chastisement necessary to bring us this wholeness was laid upon Jesus. His peace encompasses every area of life—including physical healing.

One of the most compelling arguments for divine healing is the fact that Jesus administered healing throughout His earthly ministry. And according to the Scriptures Jesus fulfilled the will of His Father when He healed people (John 4:34; 17:4). The fact that healing is God’s will should not be surprising when we note that God has always wanted His people well (Exodus 15:26).

Healing was a fundamental component of the ministry of Jesus. Matthew 8:16-17 says, “They brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” These verses make it particularly clear that the sicknesses and infirmities that Jesus healed were not only spiritual, but also physical. And that physical healing was part of a true fulfillment of Isaiah 53:5 which says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Also see Luke 4:18-19; I Peter 2:24).

Jesus indicated that miracle healing power was available for all who would believe on Him. In John 14:11-12 Jesus said, “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

When Jesus sent out His disciples to minister in His name He told them to, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8) We find no indication that the disciples were ever under the impression that healing should cease. Instead, we find them ministering healing to the multitudes (Acts 5:12-16).

Healing is an essential part of the Great Commission given to us by Jesus Christ Himself. “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” (Mark 16:15-18). The healing power of the gospel is as viable today as it was in the early church.
