God's Medicine

"The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." (John 6:63)

We've seen some tremendous medical breakthroughs in our generation. We've seen "miracle drugs" developed that can conquer many kinds of sickness and disease.

But, you know, in the 20-plus years I've been a believer, I've discovered another, much more effective kind of medicine: the Word of God. There's never been a miracle drug that could equal it. God's medicine is the answer to every need. It is life. It is health. It is the power of God. And if you put it in your heart and act on it, you will be healed.

Sometimes people ask, "If God's medicine works every time, why are there so many believers who are still sick?" There are two reasons. Number one, because they don't take the time to plant the Word concerning healing deeply into their heart. And number two, because they don't do what that Word tells them to do.

Are You Glorifying God With Your Health?

Are You Glorifying God With Your Health?
Editor's Note: This article first appeared on YoungWifesGuide.com

As a homemaker, wife and mother I know it’s my responsibility to make sure my family is living a healthy life. We are not perfect at it, (as I type this, I’m gazing longingly at the donuts inside the Starbucks display case) but I do strive to create a healthy environment for my family.

It is glorifying to God to take care of our health and our bodies. But first, I just have to get this out of the way: God is sovereign. He is Lord, creator, and sustainer over this life. I have no control over the days of my family’s life (Matthew 6:27). John Piper says it well,

A Mother Called Wisdom

Written by Jack Hayford

A Mother Called Wisdom

Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine: do not forsake my law. When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he also taught me, and said to me:

“Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble. Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; Keep her, for she is your life. - Proverbs 4:1-13

The Wise Know God is Constantly With Them

“God is always on the alert, constantly on the lookout for people who are totally committed to him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 MSG)
When God gives you a mission, you can be sure you’ll run into delays, difficulties, detours, and dead ends along the way. They are a natural part of life. But you can be ready for them.
For example, if anybody had a right to be discouraged, it was Noah. Do you know how long it took Noah to build the ark? 120 years. Could you go 120 years on a project without one word of encouragement from anybody else in society?
Noah trusted God. And when he heard God's warning about the future, Noah believed him, even though there was no sign of a flood. I bet there were many days that Noah didn't feel like going to work, but for 43,800 days, he went to the same place, and he worked. He never gave up.
Don't give up on your dream, either. Don't give up on your marriage. Don't give up on your health. Don't, don't, don't give up. God is in control. You haven’t read the final chapter of your life. God's already written it, but you haven't read it yet.
The Bible says, “God is always on the alert, constantly on the lookout for people who are totally committed to him” (2 Chronicles 16:9 MSG). God is looking for people that he can bless.
Talk About It -
  • What is the God-size dream you’ve been ready to give up on because of difficulties and delays?
  • How do you want God to bless you as you commit your life fully to him?

Make Your New Year’s Resolution Stick

Written by Lynn Bode, CFT

New PictureThe New Year is upon us. Do you have a New Year’s Resolution? Well, if you’re like most North Americans you have at least one resolution. And, if you are like the majority of these promise-makers, your resolution is probably related to health and fitness. For many it is a promise to eat healthier, exercise more, and lose weight.

While resolutions are well-intentioned, unfortunately most people fail at keeping them. With all the hype surrounding these promises, it’s easy to get caught up in it without really taking them seriously.
Set yourself up for success
We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions, I’m afraid, are not immune. However, when it comes to promises that include improving our health, it’s in our best interest not to take them lightly.

So, what’s the secret to successful resolutions? While you can’t wave a magic wand and make your resolution come true, there are some easy steps to take that will make it easier to fulfill your promise to yourself.

God Wants Us Well

Written by Larry Ollison, Ph.D
Did you know God wants us well? He wants us healthy. When the Hebrews went out of Egypt, the Bible says there was not a feeble one among them. Once I heard a radio preacher explain away healing using this story. He said God told Moses to leave the feeble people behind because they would just slow them down as they fled from Egypt.
Sometimes man will twist the scripture and go to great lengths to prove what he thinks is true rather than accepting God's Word just as it is written. God did not tell Moses to leave the sick ones behind. He healed them all and then sent them out of Egypt.
All through the scriptures, God has demonstrated that His will is for man to be healthy. He didn't create Adam with a bad leg. He didn't create Eve with asthma or arthritis. He created them whole and that is His perfect will for us.
Psalm 103:3 says He heals all our diseases. Do you believe that is true? God's Word says it. Either it is true or God's Word is lying. God does not lie. It must be true.

From Tradition to Truth

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." (Psalm 103:2-5)

Is there actually a divine purpose behind the bad things that happen in your life? Could it be that the sicknesses and calamities you experience are somehow a part of God's plan for you?

Checking Your Attitude

By Jim Burns

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

A confederate soldier in the midst of some very trying circumstances wrote the words below. I don't know who he was or where he learned this incredible principle of life, but I offer it to you today as one of the secrets of a fulfilled life. Personally, I read this poem often, and I call it my attitude check.

I asked God for strength that I might achieve. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked God for health that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy. I was given poverty that I might be wise.

The Divine Healer

About a dozen years ago, I began to apply Romans 12:1. It urges us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God. The apostle Paul also tells us twice in 1 Corinthians that our bodies are God's temples. He draws two powerful images: living sacrifices and temples.

To me that means God is concerned about us caring for and protecting our bodies. After all, our bodies are the essence of what we work with. Our minds may be more important, but they surely don't function independently. If our bodies aren't important, why would we have a resurrection that promises some form of physical substance?

Then why do we tend to discount the body or pay too little attention to its care? I've begun to realize the answer-for me, that is. If we acknowledge our responsibility to care for the temple of God, then we're held accountable for how we treat it. And if we misuse our bodies or offer God blemished sacrifices, what does that say about our commitment?

So first off, I acknowledge I'm a temple abuser. I have offered my badly-taken-care-of and less-than-perfect body to God. For years, I was among the sleep-deprived generation. I ate a lot of foods that harmed my body. Until I faced some serious physical problems, I didn't think much about exercise. I allowed stress into my life when I could have found healthy ways to correct it.

A f t e r w a r d s

Everyone goes through tough times in their life.  Jesus said that in this world you would have tribulation but to fear not, I have overcome the world.  There is no getting around the fact that we must face difficult times.  The good news is that whenever there is a time of lack, drought, recession or even famine, there will always be an afterwards.

When Israel was enslaved in Egypt, they were forced to labor four hundred years making bricks with no straw.  This took place for exactly four hundred years.  God told Abraham that His people would become enslaved and in bondage to a strange nation.  God said that afterward that Israel would come out with great substance.

Psalm 105:37
He brought them forth also with silver and gold and there was not one feeble nor sick person among them.

Millions of people carried all of the riches and wealth from the entire nation of Egypt in a single day.  No one was sick and everyone had plenty of money.  This is the place that God desires for you to be.  Just like 3 John 2 says...Beloved I wish above all things that you would prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.

What Did You Say?

Today’s Truth
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver” (Proverbs 25:11).

Friend to Friend
Fruit is one of my favorite foods. When I go grocery shopping, it always takes me longer to get through the fruit section than any other area of the store. I spend what some might consider a ridiculously long time picking out what I hope will be the juiciest apples, the plumpest grapes and sweetest bananas. Experience has taught me to quickly discard any piece of fruit that is bruised, mushy or discolored. I shake cantaloupe and thump watermelons. Ripe strawberries have a unique sweet scent and only the reddest cherries will do. Plums and tomatoes must be firm to the touch, bright in color and wrinkle-free while the more wrinkles the better when it comes to choosing passion fruit.

3 Foods That Make You Look Older

We all know fresh fruits and vegetables are the ticket to improving overall health, clear skin and bright, youthful complexions. What you might not know is that some foods can actually prematurely age your skin.

alcohol
  1. Sugar: Sweets and refined carbs raise your blood glucose levels, which interferes with the normal repair of collagen and elastin.
  2. Saturated fats: Diets high in saturated fats increase inflammation, which ages your skin.
  3. Alcohol: Alcohol dehydrates your body, leaving skin tight and dry. Your liver also releases skin-aging free radicals as it metabolizes alcohol.

Is Viagra From God Or the Devil?

Question: I've never used Viagra and don't need to, but I realize that I have an underlying resistance to any drug used for sexual performance. What is your opinion of these kinds of drugs?
Answer: I think your apprehension to drugs is a very common feeling among Christians. If you don't need them, praise God and don't take any! For me, they are like any other medication you would take from a doctor.
I have talked with Christians from all over the country who think medication whether for depression, anxiety or headaches are all of the devil and a "real" Christian wouldn't take them. For me, the answer is simple and it points to the characters of God and the devil.
We know the devil comes to destroy, kill and steal, right? We also know that God has come to give us abundant life. So I ask you, who would produce this medicine? Would the devil, who hates you and desires for you to feel every headache, depression, anxiety and erectile issue, want you healthy, happy and to have a great love life? I truly doubt that he would want to alleviate any of your pain in life.

Is it true that prolonged sex (like for an hour) has health benefits or is that a myth?

It sounds like you might be reading Maxim, not New Man for sexual theories. It's true; any aerobic activity done for an extensive period of time can have health benefits. But this could be a really hard sell for your wife.
The way it would sound to her is, "Hey honey, let me use your body for an hour because I am too lazy to go to the gym." Sex isn't about calorie burning or building great abs. If that's what you want, eat less and exercise regularly.
If your wife wants sex for an hour, fine. But most women—after a day at the office, time taking care of the children, homework, cooking and cleaning—are not really that interested in marathon sex so that you can get your heart rate up. To them, it might seem a little selfish.
Now if you take your wife to some secluded, tropical island with no children, cell phones, laptop or any responsibilities, and it's about making her happy, you might have a better chance at your one-hour goal.

Beauty from the Inside Out

Janet Maccaro, PH.D.,

You’ll need more than cosmetics for great-looking skin and a lovely appearance. You’ll need to understand the health and beauty connection.

Beauty truly does radiate from within. A healthy, vibrant woman defies age. As a testimony and reflection of our self-esteem, inner beauty and vibrancy, true beauty is the result of inner vitality, balance, health and happiness, not vanity.
Optimal nutrition, stress-relieving exercise and a positive frame of mind are requirements you must tote along on your continued journey toward complete balance. A balanced body and a beautiful spirit are better than the very best cosmetic application or surgery.
With proper nutrition, rest, relaxation and exercise, you can keep your body balanced, healthy and youthful throughout your entire life. Your skin can be wrinkle-free and elastic, your eyes can sparkle, your complexion can be smooth, and your face can be firm and tight.

Before You Touch Her Body

For romance to deepen, here is a truth that should be emblazoned on the heart of every husband.

Growing up, I hated school and studying. Well, I hated most studying. But I loved two local sports teams: the University of Maryland Terps—specifically, the basketball team—and my beloved Washington Redskins. Somehow I acquired an impressive body of knowledge about these teams, even as I continued to get lousy grades in school.

While class work was mostly drudgery, learning about the Terps and Skins was effortless joy. I loved to watch them, think about them, read about them, talk about them, and listen to games on the radio. To absorb everything I possibly could about these guys—to study them—was rich food for my schoolboy's soul.

Why was that kind of learning so easy for me when formal education was so hard? What made the difference?

Passion.

No secret there. What we love, we want to learn about. And what we love to study, we come to love even more. That's just the way God has wired us. I loved the Terps and Skins; so learning about them and growing in my zeal for them was a totally natural process.

I still enjoy following those teams, but my strongest passions now lie elsewhere.
