Rising Above Loss

Written by Jim Penner
"The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." -Job 1:22
In the first chapter of the book of Job, a messenger brings distressing news that someone had stolen Job's herd of five hundred oxen and killed the servants tending to them. Then another messenger hurries in to tell him that fire from the heavens just burned up his herd of seven thousand sheep! Still another messenger ran in to announce that thieves had stolen his herd of three thousand camels. Then the most horrific news of all came to the already devastated Job, that his seven sons and three daughters were dead.

A distraught Job tore his robe, shaved his head, and then fell to his knees in worship, saying, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord!"

I cannot even imagine how I would react to the loss that Job experienced in his life. Yet, every time we experience a loss in our lives, the devastation can be overwhelming. In times of such loss, let us learn from Job how to turn that loss into gain as we fall to our knees in worship before our Heavenly Father and say, "The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord!"

PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, You alone paid the price on the cross that we might have eternal life with You. This life on earth is so momentary compared to that eternity. Let us keep our eyes on You, our Savior and Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.

What is the greatest loss you have experienced in this lifetime? What has helped your heart heal as you mourn that loss? How has the Lord blessed you during this time of healing?
