Your Heavenly Cheering Squad

by Rick Warren

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1 NLT)

Home field advantage can mean everything in sports. Teams who are at home often have a far better record than those on the road. When a team has someone cheering them on, they can often outplay their ability.

The Bible says that you, too, have an audience cheering you on. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us” (NLT).

Nothing you do is private. You have an audience. Heaven is watching. But, more importantly, you have a cheering section. The Bible says that everyone in Heaven is cheering you on.

You probably realize that God knows everything. The Bible says “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth” (2 Chronicles 16:9 KJV). The Lord doesn’t miss a thing. He knows your ups and your downs — your everything. He knows every thought you have.

Why Sex Doesn’t Gross You Out When You’re Aroused

Getting turned on overrides women's natural disgust response, a study suggests, making them more willing to do things they otherwise wouldn't

If you think about it, sex is actually sort of disgusting, what with all the sweat, saliva, fluids and smells. So much so that a group of researchers from the Netherlands got to thinking, How do people enjoy sex at all?

According to their small new study, people — at least women — may be able to get over the “ick” factor associated with sex by getting turned on. Sexual arousal overrides the natural disgust response, the researchers found, and allows women to willingly engage in behaviors that they might normally find repugnant.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Groningen, involved 90 women who were randomly assigned to one of three groups. One group watched a “female friendly” erotic video; another watched a video of high-adrenaline sports like skydiving or rafting, designed to be arousing but not sexually so; and the third group watched a neutral video clip of a train.

Why do young, fit men die playing sports?

By Health Xchange | Fit to Post Health
An underlying heart condition may be the cause of sudden deaths in sport events. (Health Xchange)
An underlying heart condition may be the cause of sudden deaths in sport events. (Health Xchange)
Just four days after English Premier League midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered cardiac arrest during an English FA Cup match, Indian footballer Venkatesh suffered a similar fate during a match in Bangalore, India.
The 27-year-old Venkatesh, who was playing in a district level league match on March 21, collapsed on the field during the back end of the match.
While 23-year-old Muamba is in hospital in London recovering from his mid-match cardiac arrest, Venkatesh did not survive.
In a similar incident in Singapore a week earlier, 19-year-old Temasek Polytechnic student Muhammad Khairil Muhamad Nizam suddenly collapsed halfway through a friendly football match.
He was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state but didn't survive. While investigations are underway into his death, initial reports indicated that he had died of heart failure.
There have been other previous sudden death incidences related to sports in Singapore. Last year, a 22-year-old Singaporean runner, Malcolm Sng Wei Ren, collapsed and died during the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore.
What can explain such unexpected deaths?According to doctors, these sudden deaths in otherwise healthy and fit sportsmen may be explained by an underlying heart problem, compounded by vigorous physical exertion.
Dr Reginald Liew, consultant at the Department of Cardiology and deputy director of the research and development unit at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) said an underlying heart problem could include:
  • a heart muscle disorder (e.g. abnormal thickening of heart muscles)
  • an electrical problem (e.g. abnormal heart rhythm)
  • an infection weakening the heart muscle
  • a congenital abnormality of the coronary arteries
"The first two of these causes often have a genetic predisposition, meaning they may be related to certain mutations," Liew said. Given the appropriate stimuli and triggers, all four scenarios, he explained, could result in ventricular fibrillation: the heart ventricles don't contract properly, which may cause the heart to stop suddenly.
Who's at risk?Sometimes, the victim is found to have a family history of sudden death. But sudden cardiac arrest can also occur in healthy individuals without any known pre-existing heart issues and with no known family history of sudden death.
Liew added that there are screening tests available for the detection of heart muscle diseases and heart electrical disorders. For example, an echocardiogram can detect the former, and 12-lead ECG, the latter.
What can you do to lessen your risk of heart disease?
  • Have your cholesterol levels checked once a year. Excess cholesterol can cause the blood flow to the heart to become blocked or reduced.
  • Get your blood pressure checked yearly. If your blood pressure is persistently above 140/90mmHg and left untreated, it can result in damage to the heart and blood vessels.
  • Control your diabetes and monitor your blood sugar levels.
  • Lose excess body fat, especially around the waist.
  • Exercise regularly to help prevent heart and blood vessel disease. Just check with your doctor first if you have known coronary artery disease or if you're above 40 years of age and have been inactive.
  • Quit smoking. Smokers have two to three times the risk of non-smokers of sudden cardiac death. In fact, smokers account for about 40 per cent of deaths caused by heart disease in patients who are younger than 65 years.
  • Manage your stress. Prolonged stress may contribute to a heart attack. Emotional stress and tension also cause the body to produce adrenaline, which makes the heart pump faster and harder, and may also cause the blood vessels to narrow down.

All the junkfoods and chemically-laced preserved food stuck in the guts for years and mutated into toxins and re-introduce to the blood via the intestinal villi - this is a more probable cause of most of the diseases including sudden death as the "toxins" can mutate into so many possibilities ie: cholesterol, uric acid, assorted bad bacteria: some of these that are cancer-forming. So clean your guts and plugged your mouth from junks (creation of men) and seafoods and eat natural (boiled, raw juiced, natural fruits, veggies, rootcrops) and you will never go wrong. Take it from God - (1Timothy 4:4) "For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving.."

Why Can’t Women Dunk?

By Dean Schabner
ap britney griner dunk jt 120325 wblog Why Cant Women Dunk?

Well, as Baylor University’s Brittney Griner so demonstratively proved twice this week, they can dunk, but they sure don’t do it very often.

When Griner, a 6-foot-8 junior, dunked Tuesday in Baylor’s 76-57 victory over Florida, she became just the second woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game — and the first since 2006. When she dunked again Saturday in an 83-68 victory over Georgia Tech, she tied the record for most dunks by a woman in the tournament.
Griner, who has recorded double-doubles in 100 of her 102 college games and is the first player to score 2000 points and block 500 shots in her career, hardly needs to dunk to be imposing, but her coach says it wouldn’t hurt.
“I think she’s gotten away from trying to be monstrous with her going to the rim,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said after the game Tuesday. “I told her about two weeks ago — I said: ‘Even if you miss it, it sends a message.’”
The last woman to dunk in the tournament was Candace Parker of Tennessee, who threw it down twice in a game in 2006 against Army.
Griner’s dunk Tuesday was her first of the season, and with the one Saturday, she has seven in her career, tying Parker for the record for a woman’s college player.
But a dominant 6-foot-8 male player might dunk seven times in a game. So what’s the difference?
According to Dr. Linn Goldberg, a professor of medicine and head of the Division of Health Promotion and Sports Medicine at the Oregon Health and Science University, it likely has to do with differences in height, muscle types and attitude.
Goldberg pointed out that it is not only on the basketball court where we see the difference: In the high jump, the men’s record is almost 17 percent higher than the women’s.
The key to strength, speed and power are activated fast twitch or Type II muscle fibers, especially type IIb, Goldberg said. Men have more muscle mass, in part due to the amount of testosterone, which is a naturally produced anabolic steroid, and thus they have more Type IIb muscle mass.
“Although women do produce some androgen, it is a small amount compared to males, and thus they have less muscle strength and power to jump,” Goldberg said. “Testosterone not only increases muscle mass, it also increases the size of motor neurons, which induces more power, which is needed for jumping ability.”
Size matters too — since women are not generally as tall as men — but there is obviously still a difference between men and women of the same height, and Goldberg said another factor could be the female mind-set vs. the male.
“I imagine many more women would be able to dunk, but either don’t take the opportunity or know full well that a dunk is worth no more points than a layup, a jump shot from within the 3-point perimeter, and less points than a 3-point shot,” Goldberg said.
“I may be off the mark, but in general, women are less ‘sensation-seeking’ than men, and thus may understand that they will not get more points for a dunk, makes them less likely to do something that in the end achieves nothing else but entertainment for the crowd,” he said.

5 ways you can stay fit as a couple

By Patricia Hizon | Yahoo! SHE

It takes two to keep fit and healthy.  If you’re a health buff, imagine being married to a junk food-eating, non-exercising, potbelly-scratching couch potato.  Not pretty!

It is important for couples to work together, like they do in other aspects of their relationship, to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Here are simple and easy tips.

1. Watch each other’s diet.

It’s really not that easy to go on any kind of diet if the person you’re constantly with is munching on the very same food you’re trying to avoid.  This sometimes leads to tension in the relationship.

Couples should mutually agree on the terms of the diet—whether it’s to cut down on carbs or sodium, use organic ingredients, or go vegetarian.

Agreement is key to commitment.  That means that you have to manage your food intake together as a couple and check on one another.

The best way to get this started is to consult a nutritionist.  You and your partner might have different dietary needs and goals, but the reality is you share the same pantry and kitchen.

2. Go to bed earlier.

This is a great excuse to get a head start on snuggling up. That might mean turning off the laptop, the TV, getting the kids out of the room and adjusting your evening routines so you hit the sack earlier.

When you improve your sleeping habits, you are allowing your body to recover and priming it to take on the demands of the day.

Plus, studies have shown that people who sleep less than six hours a night undergo hormone changes that lead to an increase in hunger.

3. Make gym dates a regular thing.

Using cardio machines side by side can help motivate and encourage the other to reach his or her individual goals.

On weights, you or your partner can praise each other as you flex in front of the mirror.  Ladies, squeeze his biceps and show some admiration.  A regular pat on the back (or the lower extremities) can put your partner in a giddy mood.

Use opportunities like wiping the sweat beads off the side of your partner’s face to keep the flames of romance alive.  At least you’ll be burning more than just calories!

Go on gym dates two to three times a week.

4. Enjoy the outdoors.

Look for activities you and your partner would enjoy.  A brisk walk or a run around the neighborhood, a bike ride on a trail both of you can conquer, or a weekend fun run.

Or, try a little basketball, volleyball and even football at the local park. You don’t need to be great, but you need to be determined.

There are so many activities you and your partner can take up to make your bond strong...and your bones and muscles even stronger.

5. Dance like no one’s looking.

It doesn’t matter if you have two left feet. What matters is that you’re willing to spice up your workout with a partner who won’t laugh (that much) at you for your not being blessed with rhythm and grace.

Dancing is a sure-fire way to add sizzle to your relationship while allowing those unwanted fats to fizzle.

There are many dance classes and dance workouts being offered in malls, hotels and neighborhood studios. You can also hit the many dance clubs in the city.

Staying fit and healthy not only allows you to enjoy life more fully, it also puts more excitement in your relationship.

Remember, it takes two to tango.  So drop the chips, get off the couch and vow to get through the challenge together, in fitness and in health.

The Number one Secret of Achievement

Do you realize what one with the essential secrets of success is – what
tends to make people today profitable in company, sport or any other
element of their lives?
Let me come back to that inside a moment.
Ever given that I discovered that I wasn’t invincible and that my
physique would fall apart over time, I’ve been a member of a
health club.
I’ve attended regularly over the previous fifteen many years and my
body deterioration is almost staying kept in test.
On the other hand I’ve generally noticed lots of new faces at the health club,
a few of which seem to disappear more than a short time frame.
Most gyms and health clubs have a high turnover of members
or “churn” since the marketing and advertising individuals like to phone it.
A single club I know of loses close to fifty members a month and
needs to get the job done hard to sign up that amount just for the
business to stand still.
It’s not that these gyms supply a poor service, on the
contrary – it is because the members – “give up.”
New members join to lose weight or to acquire match. They then
torture themselves on the rowing machines and each of the other
instruments of agony. If, immediately after some weeks of sweat and
pain, they don’t see any visible result – they quit.
You are in all probability away ahead of me on this; because the essential
secret of good results that I mentioned earlier is this – Never
EVER Give up.
This is what separates the winners from the losers in
organization, in sport and in life – that is what results is all
about.
If you have a mountain to climb both literally or
figuratively and you also reach an obstacle – do not give up.
Obtain an additional way round – even go back a quick distance and
come with the scenario from yet another course.
Whatever it is you happen to be attempting to realize, what ever good results
you desire – never ever give up! Make errors – fall down – get up
- fall down – but get up and try out again.
So there you may have it – If you would like results don’t forget what
Winston Churchill the moment mentioned – “Never – Never – By no means give
up!”
