God Is for You, Not Against You

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. —James 5:14-15

Jesus cared about the sick. One of the first things said about Jesus in the New Testament is His care for the afflicted: "Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people" (Matt. 4:23). The sick came to Him, and healing them was much of His ministry. Even after He went to heaven, the ministry of healing continued. 
It is even mentioned in the very last chapter of the Book of Acts that the apostle Paul healed people on the island called Malta. The sick people came to him; he placed his hands on them and healed them, and everybody on the island was cured (Acts 28:9).

The Defeat of Disease and Death

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases.' Matthew 8:16-17


My friend Skip and I are the same age, plus he broke his neck the same day I did. What's more, his diving accident also occurred in the Chesapeake Bay! I dove into the Maryland side of the bay; he, the Virginia side. You can see why I've always felt a special kinship with Skip. And my heart broke when I learned he died from complications connected with his quadriplegia. It made me angry at death and disease!

At the same time, I felt a sense of joy. Christ defeated death and disease by taking them with Him to the grave. God's judgment on the sin which ushered disease into the world was endured by Jesus when He died. The prophet Isaiah explained, "He was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5). The horrible blows on Jesus' back purchased a world without disease - that world is still in the future, but it's coming soon (Romans 8:23-24). And Skip and I can't wait!

HEALING IS GOD'S WILL


Matthew 8:2, "And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." MATTHEW 8:1-4

Leprosy was a hated disease and its symptoms are described in detail in Leviticus 13:1-46. This leper believed Jesus could heal him, but doubted His willingness to heal him. Jesus showed him His willingness to heal, and since He is no respecter of persons, He established a precedent for us (Rom. 2:11). This leper did not know God's will concerning healing, but this is not the case with us. The Word of God is the will of God, and it reveals that it is always God's will to heal.

Isaiah 53:5, makes it clear that when Isaiah said "with his stripes we are healed", he was speaking of the physical healing of our bodies. Jesus provided for physical healing as well as forgiveness of sins. The very word "save" (Gk.-"sozo") is translated "made whole" in reference to physical healing in Matthew 9:22, Mark 5:34, and Luke 8:48. James 5:15 says, "the prayer of faith shall save (Gk.-"sozo") the sick."

f Jesus Hasn't Changed, Why Isn't He Moving Like in the Past?

More than once I’ve led a team of evangelists in a series of crusades in Madras/Chennai, India. The last time I was there, the magnitude of the people’s needs was totally overwhelming. Every kind of sickness and disease imaginable was represented in the vast crowd that thronged to hear the Word of God.

It was amazing to see the response of these precious souls receiving the greatest miracle of all: the born-again experience. However, as I watched, a gnawing question rose up within my spirit. I recognized it as coming from the Lord, and it shook me to the very core of my being.

“When will I be presented to the multitudes today as I was presented yesterday? Have I changed in 2,000 years? Is it not still My desire to heal the sick and set the captives free?”

God Wants Us Well

Did you know God wants us well? He wants us healthy. When the Hebrews went out of Egypt, the Bible says there was not a feeble one among them. Once I heard a radio preacher explain away healing using this story. He said God told Moses to leave the feeble people behind because they would just slow them down as they fled from Egypt. 
Sometimes man will twist the scripture and go to great lengths to prove what he thinks is true rather than accepting God's Word just as it is written. God did not tell Moses to leave the sick ones behind. He healed them all and then sent them out of Egypt. 
All through the scriptures, God has demonstrated that His will is for man to be healthy. He didn't create Adam with a bad leg. He didn't create Eve with asthma or arthritis. He created them whole and that is His perfect will for us. 
Psalm 103:3 says He heals all our diseases. Do you believe that is true? God's Word says it. Either it is true or God's Word is lying. God does not lie. It must be true.

Can women get a disease or get sick from masturbating?


I’m a teenager and I’ve never had sex...but ever since my health class, I’m afraid that if I touch myself I’ll contract a disease. I have masturbated, but that’s it. For the past three days, I’ve had a stomach virus and I started to feel better today...but then I found a small red bump on my vagina lips really close to my pubic hair. It hurts a little, but not bad. Should I be worried?

Claiming God's Promises


Whatever your situation is, whether you lost your job, lost a loved one, going through a painful divorce or diagnosed with a life threatening disease, do not loose faith! 

There is always light at the end of the tunnel, just as there is calm after the storm. The God who delivered the Israelites out of slavery is still the same God yesterday,today and forever! 

You can take comfort knowing that He will never forsake you or leave you! The bible is full of God's promises, those are His words. Because His words are true and gives life we can use His words to get out of a sticky situation. 

This lens is about learning how to claim God's promises in the midst of the storm. To pray God's words through a time of crises and coming out victorious! 

This lens is for all of you who are facing the storms of life.

As Paul learned about his father’s terrible disease, he wondered how he and his family would cope with the many implications. Over time they were able to come to a place where their family did not experience ultimate despair. Where does their confidence come from in the most difficult times?

Permission to Hurt

The Bible tells of a walk Jesus took with His disciples one day to a pool where people believed they could be healed of any disease or injury. The legend was that the first person into the pool after an angel created a disturbance in the water would be miraculously cured. For me, one of the most remarkable things that happened in the story is actually something that didn’t happen. As Jesus and His disciples walked into the area of the pool they must have been surrounded by broken, hurting, and sickly people. It must have been hard to walk without stepping on someone laying by the pool, waiting for the angel to stir the water. And this is what didn’t happen: Jesus didn’t lecture anyone about being hurt or sick. No one scolded anyone about being in the condition they were in. The Great Physician didn’t begin this episode with a lecture about why these people shouldn’t feel, or act, or hurt the way they were. No one discounted the pain by even remotely suggesting that it might be inappropriate to be in pain.

Why then, are we so uncomfortable with the idea of being hurt? Why is it that when I am manipulated, or used, or attacked, I get this sense that I shouldn’t feel the embarrassment, the betrayal, or the anger the situation aroused in me? Could it be that we are so uncomfortable with pain that we refuse to admit that it has a place in our lives and especially in our spiritual journeys? I know that in my case I tend to believe that I have to get beyond the pain quickly and get back to a level of productivity and business that I have almost always covered over my wounds without having cleaned them out first. And of course, that never helps.

So, today, I want to give you permission to hurt. You may feel your pain. You may examine your sorrow and bewilderment. You have permission to suffer without feeling the need to gloss it over and get on with life, and without the need to act as if everything is OK, or is going to be OK, even when there is no evidence of that anywhere. You and I both know that you should get over this, and I promise you that you can. But first, you have to stop and process the pain. You have to come to terms with what you feel and what you’ve experienced that has stirred up those feelings. If you don’t take this very first step of allowing yourself to feel the fullness of your hurt, you may never move beyond it. So, it’s OK… The time will come when Jesus will ask the question “Do you want to get well?”, but that time doesn’t have to be today if you haven’t yet admitted how much you need to get well in the first place.

So, knowing that relief, joy, and growth are certainly very near to you, it is safe for you to take a little time to acknowledge what your soul already knows. You are not alone, the Spirit is ready to stir your pool, but there is no rush. When you are ready for the next step, the next step will begin to take you. Q : Why can someone who is a true Christian die this painfully ?

Answer: 
Christians get the same diseases that non-Christians get. It has to do with the fact that we don't live in the Kingdom. 

We live in a disordered, broken existence, and this brokenness includes our bodies. No exemptions have been granted -- not even for Christ, who had to suffer and die. 

The only difference and comfort for a Christian is that death doesn't have the final word.

No one knows why anyone, Christian or non-Christian, has to go through that much pain, why the brokenness has to express itself in ways as terrible as terminal cancer or AIDS. 

Don't believe anyone who says they know, because they're liars. I'm not being evasive by saying it's a mystery, I'm just saying that humankind has such limited knowledge that the only thing we really know is that our deepest parts scream that it's not right. 

That's a good indicator that God agrees with you, and is working on it, in tears.

The Role of Sleep in Type 2 Diabetes

Beep. Beep. Beep. Reaching in utter exhaustion to silence the shrill cry of the morning alarm is a TV and movie cliché. And with good reason: Americans are indeed tired. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 percent of Americans report getting less than the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night. This rampant deprivation has consequences, and not just grogginess: People who don’t get enough sleep are prone to a slew of health problems, including type 2 diabetes. How sleep (or the lack of it) affects diabetes is still being investigated, but it’s possible that for some people, preventing or controlling diabetes is as simple as getting an extra hour or two of z’s each night.

From Lab to BedAmericans used to sleep more. Between 1959 and 2002, the percentage of people sleeping fewer than seven hours a night on a regular basis more than doubled. Meanwhile, the number of people with type 2 diabetes has soared. Could there be a connection? At the very least there’s an association between lack of sleep and diabetes, but it’s still not clear whether the former helps cause the latter and, if so, how.

The first real clue that sleep deprivation could lead to type 2 diabetes came from a 1999 study published in The Lancet. Healthy young people without any hint of diabetes came to live in a lab for a week. Their sleep was restricted to just four hours for six nights in a row. By the end of the experiment, their bodies’ ability to use glucose had radically shifted. “After a week of short sleep, their glucose metabolism looked like that of old men,” says Kristen Knutson, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago who studies the role of sleep in disease. “For a long time, people thought sleep was for the brain and only for the brain. This study showed that it was for the body, too.”

Since this landmark study, similar experiments have been conducted to explore the relationship between sleep and diabetes in more detail. A 2008 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences sought to uncover the influence of deep sleep on the risk for diabetes. During sleep, the body cycles between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and four stages of non-REM sleep, the deepest of which is called slow-wave sleep.

While volunteers in the study got a normal amount of total and REM sleep, the researchers restricted their slow-wave time. The result? Metabolic changes that increase the risk of diabetes. According to Knutson, this study showed that “it’s not just how much sleep that matters, but you need good-quality sleep.”

These short-term experiments show that sleep can affect metabolism, but they can’t prove that inadequate sleep causes diabetes. For starters, it isn’t clear whether or not the body would eventually adjust to the sleep deficiency and normalize its metabolism over time. However, evidence that sleep and diabetes are connected has been established by assessing the health and sleep habits of groups of people. A 2010 study in Diabetes Care found that people with sleep problems - difficulty falling or staying asleep, sleeping fewer than five to six hours a night or more than eight to nine hours - are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than sound sleepers.

Sleep may also affect blood glucose levels in people with diabetes. A 2006 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that those who report poor sleep quality have higher A1Cs (average blood glucose over two to three months). This finding is of concern because of the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in people with diabetes.

OSA affects 2 out of 3 people with type 2 diabetes. It causes people to stop breathing repeatedly while sleeping because of an obstruction in the airway. This reduces how much sleep a person gets and disrupts the sleep cycle. OSA has been associated with high blood pressure. While OSA may lead to diabetes simply because of sleep deprivation, the person with sleep apnea is also deprived of oxygen, which adds a complicating factor. “There’s more than just sleep loss going on [with OSA],” says Knutson. “[Researchers] are still trying to disentangle sleep loss from oxygen deficiency.” Another confounding factor for scientists trying to understand the sleep-diabetes connection is obesity, which increases risk for both type 2 diabetes and OSA.
Sunrise, SunsetWhile these studies point to sleep as a factor in diabetes, they have little to say about how this connection might work biologically. In recent years, though, scientists have discovered that the brain has a master internal clock that seems to be intricately connected to glucose metabolism and many other bodily functions.

This clock consists of a network of proteins, which function essentially as the clock’s gears. The proteins’ numbers systematically rise and fall over the course of 24 hours. This circadian rhythm repeats itself each 24-hour period and in most of the cells in the body. Specific genes encode each component of the clock and are critical to the proper functioning of the cell. “The question we want to know is: Do the genes themselves have a primary effect on glucose?” says Joseph Bass, MD, PhD, an associate professor at Northwestern University. “From [studies in] mice, the answer is yes.” With humans, though, the question is still unanswered.
While research into the link between sleep and metabolism is still in its infancy, one goal is discovering how behavior that’s out of step with circadian rhythm may trigger high blood glucose or raise the risk for diabetes. Sleeping too little or at the wrong times could somehow make the clock malfunction or perhaps disrupt biological schedules that are synchronized to the clock, such as insulin secretion. Another possibility is that the unnatural sleep patterns could prevent the master clock in the brain from correctly setting the time in the body’s organs, each of which has its own internal clock. 

“[Biological] clocks evolved to optimize energy handling with respect to the rotation of the Earth,” says Bass. For example, during the day the clock primes the body for feeding. It helps the pancreas make more insulin during daylight hours to help the body use and store glucose. In his work, Bass has observed “rhythmic variations in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.” At night, the opposite scenario takes hold; the body expects to be asleep and so the clock makes it easier to tap into stored energy by boosting production of glucagon. This is a hormone that raises blood glucose levels by mobilizing glucose stored in the liver and helps keep the body fueled during periods of fasting, like during sleep.

Eating or sleeping at the wrong times could upset the harmony between the body’s clock and behavior. Light is believed to set the clock in the brain, which is the body’s “standard time.” Even seeing artificial light when the body expects it to be dark - say, while staying up late watching TV - may cause trouble. A study this year in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that exposure to artificial light before bedtime can disrupt the biological clock. Diet may also tweak body clocks. A 2007 study by Bass in Cell Metabolism found that feeding mice a high-fat diet can alter circadian rhythm. A 2006 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that feeding mice at odd hours could change their internal clock mechanics and cause them to expect meals on a different schedule.

It may be a long time before researchers uncover the molecular basis for the connection between sleep and type 2 diabetes, but that doesn’t mean that better sleep can’t contribute right away to progress in preventing and treating the disease. “The work needed now is intervention,” says Knutson. “If you take habitually poor sleepers and make them sleep better, can you prevent or improve diabetes? If people can adhere to sleep, it could be a novel way to treat.” Though the data aren’t conclusive, studies do suggest that helping people with obstructive sleep apnea rest easier can improve their blood glucose levels. There’s no need to wait for the scientific dust to clear. You can get a good night’s sleep tonight.

'Nodding disease' confounds experts, kills children By Max Delany


Patrick Anywar, 14, lies curled up naked in the dust and midday heat of a Ugandan village, struggling to look up at his younger brother and sister playing in front of the family home.
After a minute's effort to face his siblings, Anywar's head slumps onto his chest and his emaciated body is gripped by convulsions.
Anywar is one of more than 3,000 children in northern Ugandawho are suffering from a debilitating mystery ailment known as nodding disease, which has touched almost every family in the village of Tumangu.
For several years, scientists have tried and failed to determine the cause of the illness, which locals say has killed hundreds of youngsters.
What they do know is that the disease affects only children and gradually devastates its victims through debilitating seizures, stunted growth, wasted limbs, mental disabilities and sometimes starvation.
Anywar's mother, Rugina Abwoyo, has already lost one son, named Watmon, to the disease in 2010. Now she says she can do little but watch on helplessly as another child slips away.
"Before he was walking and running like other children, but now someone always has to stay home to look after him," Abwoyo told AFP. "The disease is terrible -- it does not let him drink or eat by himself."
Walking along footpaths cut through the sorghum plantations, Joe Otto, a volunteer health worker, explains how nodding disease has ravaged Tumangu, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) north of the capital Kampala.
"There are 780 people living in this village and we have 97 cases of the disease. It has affected almost every family," Otto, 54, told AFP.
Whenever sporadic deliveries of medicine arrive at the local health centre several kilometres away, Otto pedals his bicycle to fetch the drugs. But he knows that they only offer a short-term solution.
"We are giving out drugs for epilepsy, like carbamazepine, but this disease is different from epilepsy," Otto said.
Instead, as the disease has torn through their community, local residents have moved from fear to a grim acceptance, Otto says.
"We started saying that the patient who had died was the one who had been cured, because finally they were at rest from this painful disease," Otto said.
Scientists are trying to find a cure: since 2010, researchers ranging from epidemiologists to environmental experts, neurologists, toxicologists and psychiatrists have carried out a range of tests.
Investigations have looked at possible links between the disease and everything from a parasite that causes river blindness, to malnutrition and the after-effects of a civil war that ravaged northern Uganda for decades.
"We looked at all this, but unfortunately we were not able to pinpoint any significant contributing or risk factors," said Miriam Nanyunja, disease control and prevention officer at the World Health Organisation in Kampala.
"The search for the causative agent is still ongoing," she added.
Often the results have thrown up more questions than answers. Scientists do not know if the disease is linked to similar outbreaks in neighbouring South Sudan and Tanzania.
Efforts continue to understand if the disease is still spreading or has peaked -- and why it is seems confined only to certain communities.
Last month, after pressure from lawmakers from affected areas, Uganda's health ministry produced an emergency response plan to try to identify and control the disease.
However, Nanyunja says that while the search for the cause and a possible cure goes on, for now, doctors can only focus on trying to alleviate the symptoms.
"There are many diseases that we continue to treat symptomatically, without knowing the exact cause," Nanyunja said.
But for Patrick Anywar, any attempts to curb or cure the disease may come too late.
"We are hoping that the doctors work very hard to get the cure for this disease," his mother Abwoyo says.
"There is no future for us as so many children have already been affected, but we hope that our youngest can be saved."
