(RNS)  Pastor Rick Warren, the best-known name in American evangelism after Rev. Billy Graham, lost his 27-year-old son, Matthew, to suicide on Friday (April 5).

In the days since, uncounted strangers have joined the 20,000 congregants who worship at the megachurch network “Pastor Rick” built in Southern California, Warren’s nearly 1 million Twitter followers and hundreds of thousands of Facebook followers in flooding social media with consolation and prayer.

“Kay and I are overwhelmed by your love, prayers, and kind words,” Warren tweeted on Sunday. “You are all encouraging our #brokenhearts.”

But a shocking number are taking the moment of media attention to lash out at Warren on their digital tom-toms. The attacks are aimed both at him personally and at his Christian message.

Mocking Jesus: Blasphemy Reveals Condition of Darkened Hearts

SHAWN A. AKERS
President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama
For two days, I struggled with writing this column. My spirit has grieved over it immensely.

I have prayed in earnest about what God would have me say about a subject that I have become so passionate about. I have asked Him for wisdom and guidance so that I would not be offensive in my words. I have even told myself that I cannot write it in fear that some would take umbrage.

But fear, as I know from reading the Word, comes from Satan. And I know that from 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.”

With that in mind, I would like to address the recent intense trend in American society that has seen the public mocking of Jesus Christ. By now, you have probably seen the video of Jamie Foxx declaring President Barack Obama as “our lord and savior.” And, the story that Charisma posted Wednesday about the painting depicting President Obama as Jesus, with a crown of thorns on his head and his outstretched arms.

Rob Bell Redefines Fidelity, Love, and Who God Is

By Bethany Blankley , CP Op-Ed Contributor

Bethany Blankley
Bethany Blankley writes about
religious, political, and cultural issues
from a biblical perspective and
appears on national television and
radio as a political pundit.

It is troubling that a former evangelical pastor like Rob Bell would endorse same-sex marriage because "the ship has sailed… this is the world that we are living in," and because he is "for love, whether it is a man and woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man."

His reasoning is flawed primarily because he does not hold the Bible as the authoritative word of God.

The Bible cannot be clearer on homosexuality. At every mention it is condemned as a sin (Gen. 19; Lev. 18:22, 20:13; Rom. 1:26-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1: 8-10; Jude 4 ff among others). Additionally, Jesus indicated that the only alternative to heterosexual marriage was celibacy (Matt 19:10). The bible is also clear on marriage-that God created it as a covenant between himself, one man and one woman (Gen. 1:26; 2:22-24; Matt. 19:4-6; Eph. 5:22-23; 1 Cor. 7:1-16; Heb. 13:4-7; Mark 10:6-9).

Young ‘Millennials’ losing faith in record numbers

Posted on 20 April 2012

WASHINGTON (RNS)  A growing tide of young Americans is drifting away from the religions of their childhood — and most of them are ending up in no religion at all.

One in four young adults choose “unaffiliated” when asked about their religion, according to a new report from the Public Religion Research Institute and Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs.

But most within this unaffiliated group — 55 percent — identified with a religious group when they were younger.

“These younger unaffiliated adults are very nonreligious,” said Daniel Cox, PRRI’s research director. “They demonstrate much lower levels of religiosity than we see in the general population,” including participation in religious rituals or worship services.

Never, Never, Never Give Up on Traditional Marriage

Chuck Colson

Is it time for the “marriage battleground” to shift to religious freedom? That’s the question posed by a recent Christianity Today article in the wake of New York’s approval of same-sex “marriage.”  According to University of Virginia law professor Douglas Laycock, the answer is “Yes.” He says, “Religious conservatives who advocate traditional marriage must shift their focus to fighting for religious freedom.”

That’s because Laycock and, sadly, many others mistakenly believe in the inevitability of  same-sex “marriage.” They think that the best Christians can do now is make sure gay “marriage” laws at least provide a modicum of protection for the freedoms of those of us who believe in traditional marriage.

Yes, same-sex “marriage,” so-called, poses a grave threat to religious freedom. There have already been cases where photographers and others have been sued for refusing to participate in same-sex “wedding” ceremonies. Catholic Charities in several states has been pushed out of the adoption business because they only place children with a married mom and dad. Make no mistake: protecting religious freedom is a major priority.

Dead Hands: Sexual Liberalism and Same-Sex Marriage

Chuck Colson

New York has become the largest state to approve so-called same-sex “marriage.” Supporters, obviously, were delighted at the news: Parades, street parties and countless other demonstrations of their feelings of moral superiority.

One of the most outlandish such demonstrations was found at Slate.com. There, a headline spoke of the “dead hand” keeping other states from approving same-sex “marriage.”

Now, in normal usage, “dead hand” refers to events in the distant past that disproportionately affect the present. But in Slate’s usage, the term was referring to recent popular votes, many less than five years ago, to prohibit same-sex marriage. It’s difficult to imagine a better example of the failure of elite opinion to understand how most Americans think and even to understand how democracy really works.

Same-Sex Spin: What Americans Really Believe about Marriage

Chuck Colson

The gap is widening, we’re told. The number of Americans in favor of same-sex “marriage” is growing. Sooner or later, so-called same-sex “marriage” will be the law of the land. There’s no stopping it.

But not so fast. On June 16, the Alliance Defense Fund and Public Opinion Strategies released the results of a new scientific survey that calls all that into question.

The survey “was part of a comprehensive examination of American attitudes toward marriage,” which included both polling and focus groups for added accuracy.

The results? A full sixty-two percent of Americans agreed that “marriage should be defined as a union between one man and one woman.” Fifty-three percent “strongly agreed.”

Perverting Democracy: Gay 'Marriage' and the Law

Chuck Colson

For two years now, I’ve warned that the drive for so-called “gay marriage” was the greatest threat to religious liberty we’ve ever faced. But I think I may have underestimated the threat, because now I fear the democratic process and the rule of law are endangered as well.

It was bad enough when the President and the Attorney General declared the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional and would not defend the law of the land in court. Never mind that the DOMA was signed by President Clinton in 1996 after the Senate passed it 85-15 and the House by a margin of 342 to 66!

But after House of Representatives hired the law firm of King and Spalding to represent DOMA in court (since the executive branch wouldn’t), something not-so-funny happened. Gay-rights groups threatened King and Spalding and its commercial clients with boycotts.

The Problem with Genderless Parenting

Chuck Colson

You may have heard the public outcry over the parents in Toronto who have decided to keep their baby’s gender a secret.

When Kathy Witterick and David Stocker sent an e-mail to friends and family announcing the birth of their baby, Storm, they wrote: “We’ve decided not to share Storm’s sex for now -- a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation.”

According to Yahoo News, “only the parents, their two other children (both boys), a close friend, and the two midwives who helped deliver the now 4-month-old baby know its gender. Even the grandparents have been left in the dark.”

Witterick and Stocker say they hope that what they’re doing will make the world “a more progressive place,” but that doesn’t seem to be working out too well.

Big Love Isn't Better: Polygamy and Same-Sex Marriage

Chuck Colson

In March, the popular HBO series “Big Love” ended its five-year run. The show about a polygamist household in Utah is as close as the vast majority of Americans will ever get to polygamy.

Or maybe not.

Shockingly, polygamy is on the rise in the West, especially in Muslim enclaves. And there are 30-50 thousand polygamists in the U.S., the vast majority living in Mormon splinter groups.

And despite the rosy picture of polygamy painted by “Big Love,” Rose McDermott, who teaches at Brown University, will tell you that in the real world, polygamy is abusive and exploitative: Women in polygamous communities suffer “higher rates of HIV infection,” increased incidences of domestic violence, and even a higher likelihood of dying in childbirth.

Pastor Ed Young Warns Society Is on 'Thin Ice' After Obama's Gay Marriage Endorsement

By Stoyan Zaimov , Christian Post Reporter

Ed Young

Pastor Ed Young of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas, stated that society is treading on "thin ice" after President Barack Obama declared his support for same-sex marriage.
Christian leaders across the nation have voiced their opinions on the president's comments, emphasizing that the Bible defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Pastor Young made his views known Thursday by calling in to Dr. Drew Pinsky's "On Call" show on HLN.
"I totally disagree with our president. I believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman, in this commitment and covenant ordained by God. So, I disagree with what he says," Young began.

The Rev. Emmett C. Burns Jr., a politically influential black minister, held an event Sunday at his Rising Sun Baptist Church in Baltimore, Md., to publicly withdraw support from Obama over his same-sex marriage support, CNN reported. "I love the president, but I cannot support what he has done," Burns was quoted as saying at the church. He also predicted that Obama's stance would lead to his defeat in November.

Black Christians in an 'Adulterous' Relationship With Obama, Says Evangelical Pastor

By Paul Stanley , Christian Post Reporter

An influential African-American evangelical pastor says that many black Christians are in an "adulterous" relationship with President Obama over the issue of same-sex marriage and that if the issue is not addressed soon, it will negatively impact the president's desire for a second term in November.

Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. and other community group leaders gathered in WAshington, D.C. Wednesdrday to announce the launch of the grassroots group, E Plubribus Unum. The group plans to rally minorities around conservative ideas during the 2012 election season.
In an interview with The Christian Post, Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., who is the senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in Baltimore, Md., and one of the nation's most outspoken black pastors, maintains that Obama has drawn a hard line on major theological issues such as same-sex marriage and expects black Christians to compromise their beliefs.

Obama calls pastors to explain gay marriage support; black churches ‘conflicted' by president's decision

By Dylan Stableford | ABC OTUS News
After making his historic remarks on same-sex unions last week, President Barack Obama led a conference call with black church pastors to explain his support for gay marriage, the New York Times reports. The call, which was held with "eight or so African-American ministers," occurred about two hours after the president's interview with ABC's Robin Roberts.
Obama explained to them that he struggled with the decision, pastors on the call told the paper, but several voiced their disapproval.
"They were wrestling with their ability to get over his theological position," the Rev. Delman Coates, a Maryland pastor who was on the call, told the Times.
The conference call was part of a quiet effort by the president to control potential political damage caused by his support of same-sex marriage.
According to the Times, Obama phoned "at least one [the Rev. Joel C. Hunter] of the five spiritual leaders he calls regularly for religious guidance, and his aides contacted other religious figures who have been supportive in the past."

Obama Alienates Christians With Same-Sex Marriage Endorsement

JENNIFER LECLAIRE

Why I Condemn Obama's Support of Same-Sex Marriage

BISHOP HARRY R. JACKSON JR.The president’s statement on Wednesday announcing he is endorsing same-sex marriage around the country is a great disappointment for many people. His decision is of great concern to those who still believe in traditional marriage.

These people fall into two major categories—those whose belief systems are informed by their spiritual background and those who have been convinced that redefining marriage will be a horrible social experiment that will further weaken America’s declining structure.

Many in the faith community have suspected for some time that the president’s announcement was coming. It seems as though the administration feels that this moment will bolster the same-sex marriage movement from the crushing defeat it experienced in North Carolina.

There are two outcomes I believe the president’s advisers have not anticipated: (1) His announcement will strengthen future campaigns for the remaining states pushing a marriage amendment. In the state of Maryland, in particular, the already-successful petition process will be injected with a new fuel of enthusiasm and intensity. (2) Although many political analysts believe this announcement will blow over by November, they seem to forget that President Bush won Florida and Ohio in 2004 because of a 7 to 11 percent shift in the black vote alone.

In this election season, we all are aware that the economy will be the big story of the day. Nonetheless, current polls show a small margin of difference between both the presidential candidates and numerous other races around the country.

It may well be that a shift in support will be precipitated by the president’s untimely decision in light of his failure to lift the economic standing of both blacks and Hispanics. These two groups are some of the nation’s most vocal opponents of same-sex marriage. A critical mass of these voters may be pulled from their political moorings, creating an opportunity for the defeat of numerous candidates around the country, including President Obama.

Bishop Harry Jackson is senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in the Washington, D.C., area and founder and chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition.

Franklin Graham Says Obama Has Shaken Fist at God

JENNIFER LECLAIRE

Franklin Graham has some strong words for President Obama in the wake of his decision to support same-sex marriage.

“In changing his position from that of Senator/candidate Obama, President Obama has, in my view, shaken his fist at the same God who created and defined marriage. It grieves me that our president would now affirm same-sex marriage, though I believe it grieves God even more,” Graham says.

“The institution of marriage should not be defined by presidents or polls, governors or the media. The definition was set long ago and changing legislation or policy will never change God’s definition. This is a sad day for America. May God help us.”

The Evolution of the Views of a President

Published on May 10, 2012 in Current Issues in the World.
Well, it was all over the news yesterday and seen in headlines this morning in our newspapers:  “Obama: ‘I Think Same-Sex Couples Should Be Able to Get Married.’”
In an ABC TV news article, we read, “In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an ‘evolution’ that led him to this decision, based on conversations with his staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and his wife and daughters” (emphasis and link in the original).

Obama's Spiritual Adviser Rebukes President on Golden Rule, Same-Sex Marriage

By Stoyan Zaimov , Christian Post Reporter
May 10, 2012

The Rev. Joel Hunter of the 15,000-member Northland church, who is often referred to as President Barack Obama's spiritual adviser, said he is disappointed with the president's use of the "Golden Rule" to explain his endorsement of gay marriage.

"The Golden Rule is in the Bible but it cannot be used to contradict God's marriage pattern reaffirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19:4-5," Hunter shared in an interview with The Christian Post. "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and the two shall become one flesh?'"
Obama affirmed his support for same-sex marriage in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, which has sparked a great deal of debate in America among supporters of the traditional definition of marriage, and those who want to see gay marriage legalized.
"In the end, the values that I care most deeply about, and she (Michelle Obama) cares most deeply about is how we treat other people. We're both practicing Christians and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others but when we think about our faith the thing at root that we think about is not only Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf but it's also the Golden Rule – treat others the way you'd want to be treated," Obama stated.

Evolution's End? President Obama Calls for Same-Sex Marriage

By R. Albert Mohler, Jr. , Christian Post Guest Columnist
May 10, 2012

Is President Obama's "evolution" on same sex marriage finally complete? His call for the legalization of same-sex marriage yesterday is an historic and tragic milestone. An incumbent President of the United States has now called for a transformation of civilization's central institution. And yet, no observer of this President could be surprised. The arrival of this announcement was only a matter of time.

The White House confirmed this within hours of the President's announcement. As The New York Times reported on May 10, "Advisers say now that Mr. Obama had intended since early this year to define his position sometime before Democrats nominate him for re-election in September."
