Dense breasts can increase risk of cancer recurrence by almost 2-fold

Washington, March 22 (ANI): Swedish researchers have found that women aged 50 and over with denser breasts - having high percentage of dense tissue - had nearly double the risk of their cancer recurring, either in the same breast or in the surrounding lymph nodes, than women with less dense breasts.

Dr Louise Eriksson and her colleagues from the Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden) warn that doctors should take breast density into account when making decisions about treatment and follow-up for these women.

When a woman has a mammogram, the resulting scan gives an image of the breast that shows areas of white and black. The white areas represent the dense tissue, made up of the epithelium and stroma. The black areas are made up of fatty tissue, which is not dense. The percentage density (PD) of the breast is calculated by dividing the dense area by the area of the whole breast (dense and non-dense tissue included).

Breast density varies from woman to woman, and it also decreases with age.Density can vary greatly, even between postmenopausal women. In the group of women I studied, those with the lowest percentage density had breasts that were less than one percent dense, whereas those with highest PD had 75-80 percent dense breasts," Dr Eriksson explained.

"The mean average PD was 18 percent. However, density does decrease with age. Studies have shown a decrease by approximately two percent per year. The largest decrease is seen at menopause when PD decreases by approximately 10 percent," she stated.

The researchers studied the mammograms and outcomes for 1,774 post-menopausal women who were aged 50-74 and who were part of a larger study of all women with breast cancer diagnosed between 1993-1995 in Sweden.

"We found that if you have a PD at diagnosis of 25 percent or more, you have an almost two-fold increased risk of local recurrence in the breast and surrounding lymph nodes than women with a PD of less than 25 percent," said Dr Eriksson, who is a PhD student at the Karolinska, as well as a physician at the Stockholm South General Hospital.

"However, density does not increase the risk of distant metastasis and has no effect on survival. We also see that although mammographic density is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer it doesn't seem to influence tumour development in any specific way; for instance, it isn't more associated with oestrogen receptor positive tumours than oestrogen receptor negative tumours, but seems to act as a general stimulator of tumour development," she noted.

Cancer researchers do not know why breast density is a risk factor for breast cancer.

"It could simply be due to higher density being associated with more cells, which means that more cells are at risk of developing cancer," Dr Eriksson said.

"Another hypothesis is that it is the relationship between mammographic density and the stroma (which has been shown to be the main compound of mammographic density) that is central to the increase in risk.

"There is no leading hypothesis on why an increased amount of stroma would increase breast cancer risk, but it is known that the interaction between the epithelial cells and the stroma is crucial to the development of breast cancer.

"Based on the results from our study, we propose that mammographic density creates a beneficial environment for epithelial cells to transform into cancer cells; much like fertile soil giving a planted seed the needed nutrients to grow and develop," she added.

The results were presented at the eighth European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC-8) in Vienna. (ANI)

Cancer Risk Found in Coke, Pepsi: Group

U.S. regulators, reviewing an advocacy group’s complaint that a chemical used in colas causes tumors in animals, said there’s no immediate risk to consumers from the substance.
A person would have to drink more than a thousand cans of soda in a day to match the doses administered in studies that showed links to cancer in rodents, Douglas Karas, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration spokesman, said in a statement.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer- health group in Washington, said in a statement today that high levels of the chemical 4-methylimidazole were found in drinks made by Coca-Cola Co. (KO) and PepsiCo. Inc. (PEP) The chemical is part of coloring used in colas and the subject of astudy the group released today. An industry group disputed the findings.
“This is nothing more than scare tactics,” the American Beverage Association said in a statement today, calling the claims “outrageous.”
The FDA has no reason to believe consumers are in danger, the FDA’s Karas wrote in an e-mail. The agency is reviewing the group’s petition, he said.
The consumer group said it commissioned laboratory studies of products including Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Snapple Group Inc.’s Dr Pepper and Diet Dr Pepper, and Whole Foods 365 Cola from Washington-area stores.
“Coke and Pepsi, with the acquiescence of the FDA, are needlessly exposing millions of Americans to a chemical that causes cancer,” said Michael F. Jacobson, the Washington-based group’s executive director, in a statement. “The FDA needs to protect consumers from this risk.”

California Standards

Pepsi’s products, Diet Coke and regular Coca-Cola had levels that were high enough to require a warning notice in the state of California, according to the center’s release.
The chemical was included on California’s list of carcinogens even though there are no studies showing it causes cancer in humans, the industry group said.
Diana Garza Ciarlante, a spokeswoman at Atlanta-based Coca- Cola, said the chemical, also known as 4-MEI, poses no health or safety risks.
“Unlike CSPI, The Coca Cola company deals in hard facts,” she said in an e-mail. “ The body of science about 4-MEI in foods or beverages does not support the erroneous allegations that CSPI would like the public to believe.”
No regulator agency concerned with protecting the public health has stated the chemical is a human carcinogen, she said.
Gillian Galasso, a spokeswoman at PepsiCo in Purchase, New York, didn’t respond immediately to a phone message seeking comment.
Libba Letton, a spokeswoman at Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market Inc., didn’t immediately return a call and e-mail seeking comment, and a message left on the media relations line at Dr Pepper Snapple Group in Plano, Texas, wasn’t immediately returned.

    Comment: Dr. Moffat says that evidence proving a link between stress and breast cancer is weak. She added, The problem is that its very hard to measure or even define stress. And stressful situations can make some people more likely to take up unhealthy behaviors such as smoking or heavy drinking.

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
    Theory: Evidence shows that combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which uses estrogen and progesterone, can increase the risk of breast cancer, especially if used over longer periods of time.
    Comment: According to Dr. Moffat, HRT is still an effective short-term treatment for menopausal symptoms. Using HRT for a few years doesnt greatly increase your risk, but the longer you stay on it, the higher your risk becomes. Only five years after stopping will your risk return to that of a woman who has never used HRT.
    Conclusion: Strong Link
  • Trauma to Breasts
    Theory: Physical trauma to the breast can lead to the development of breast cancer.
    Comment: There is no strong evidence to suggest this. Dr. Moffat says that Cancers are fundamentally caused by faulty or damaged genes and take a very long time to develop. Rather, recent injuries to the breast will lead physicians to examine it more carefully, drawing attention to tumors that were already there.
    Conclusion: Weak Link
  • Weight Gain
    Theory: The chance of getting breast cancer after menopause increases if you gain weight. A woman who puts on around thirty pounds throughout her adult life before going through menopause doubles her risk for getting the disease.
    Comment: The link between weight gain and breast cancer is strong. Maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce your risk of getting the disease. Dr. Moffat notes that Fat is not inactive its actually pumping out hormones and other chemicals that can affect your risk of disease.
    Conclusion: Strong Link
  • Household Cleaning Products
    Theory: Some believe that household cleaning products lead to a higher risk of breast cancer, particularly after a recent US study found that women who used air freshener sprays were twenty percent more likely to develop the disease.
    Comment: There is no strong evidence that links cleaning products to breast cancer. Dr. Moffat notes that the studys subjects may have had recall bias, in which their memories were affected by their beliefs of what is true. This may be the case in this study especially because women were asked to recall insignificant behavior from years before.
    Conclusion: Weak Link
  • Using the Pill
    Theory: Taking the Pill, which contains both estrogen and progesterone, will increase your risk of breast cancer. It can take ten years of being off the Pill to bring your risk back down to levels as if you had never taken it.
    Comment: While there is strong evidence suggesting that the Pill slightly increases your risk of developing breast cancer, Dr. Moffat also points to the fact that the Pill can also protect against other cancers. She notes, It halves a womans risk of ovarian and womb cancers, and this protective effect continues for about 15-20 years after stopping.
    Conclusion: Strong Link
  • Underwire Bras
    Theory: It had been suggested that wearing an underwire bra will obstruct lymph flow and put pressure on lymph nodes in the armpit.
    Comment: There is no strong evidence linking underwire bras to breast cancer. Rather, it has been theorized that women who dont wear bras regularly tend to be thinner, which is the actual reason for their lower risk of getting breast cancer.
    Conclusion: Weak Link
  • Smoking
    Theory: A study from the California Environmental Protection Agency found that secondhand smoke and breast cancer have a causal association amongst pre-menopausal women. Additionally, exposure to smoking during childhood and puberty may also lead to breast cancer.
    Comment: According to Dr. Moffat, even though there is no definite link between smoking and breast cancer, we do know that the chemicals in cigarette smoke can cause at least a dozen different types of cancer around the body, so theres still every reason to try to be a non-smoker and avoid passive smoke when you can.
    Conclusion: Strong Link
  • Not Breast Feeding
    Theory: Research has suggested that women who breast feed their babies longer have a lower risk for developing breast cancer. It could be because breast feeding reduces a womans number of menstrual cycles, lowering her exposure to estrogen and progesterone.
    Comment: Dr. Moffat agrees with the research: the longer a woman breastfeeds, the lower her risk of cancer.
    Conclusion: Strong Link
  • Anti-Perspirants
    Theory: It was originally theorized that wearing deodorant prevents toxins from leaving the body through sweat, and because those toxins occur around the breast, breast cells can become cancerous. However, no major studies have proven this theory.
    Comment: The evidence for a link between antiperspirants and breast cancer is weak. According to Dr. Moffat, Concerns about deodorants and breast cancer started with an email hoax, and there are no facts behind this claim.

In the glow of the night you tire yourself out, watching reruns or catching up on emails on your smart phone. This sends you off into a steady sleep...

Or does it?
At night, your body naturally gets you ready for bed, secreting the hormone called melatonin. This substance makes you sleepy, keeps you sleeping and sets off a series of biological processes for the coming day.
When light of certain wavelengths hits the eye, it slows the production of melatonin. Anyone who has ever been jolted awake by a bright light knows that. But recent research is getting more specific, focusing on the actual wavelengths of light that impact our sleep the most.

Make Your House a Red Light District at Night
The findings? Light with blue wavelengths is especially good at hindering melatonin. These blue wavelengths are exactly what you’re staring at before bed—your television, your PDA and yes, even your iPad. Maybe that’s why certain areas were known as red light zones… maybe it was to facilitate sleep afterward.
Another culprit? Energy-saving lightbulbs. They are usually fluorescent, which emits blue spectrum light.

What does this mean for you?
Blue light keeps you more alert at night. It’s great if you need to recite a speech at 10:30 p.m. (though you might want to start winding down at that hour) and it’s not all bad. A month-long study showed that 30-minute, daily exposure to blue light boosted cognitive performance for elderly, compared to red light.
In another study, Swedish men who stared at a blue light screen were more alert on memory tasks, but their melatonin levels were delayed compared to subjects viewing florescent screens.
Still, for ultimate beauty benefits, lose the blue wavelength devices in your bedroom. And TV’s and iPads and all electric gadgets.  Sleep is all-important to your health and beauty, so when it’s interrupted, its effects are far-reaching. Animals  exposed to blue light gain more weight, even if they consumed the same amount of calories!

To shine more light on this controversy, the World Health Organization deemed shift work a “possible carcinogen,” due to light exposure at night. Workers up at these hours have a disrupted body clock, which suppresses melatonin production, sleep and is correlated with tumor development,” one study concluded.

If you have a job that alters your sleep schedule, talk to your doctor to get on a plan that works with your lifestyle, and your body’s natural rhythms.

Right now, the best thing you can do for your z’s is quit working on your computer and PDA about an hour before bedtime. Trade the telly for a good book, read anywhere but your bedroom.
Your bedroom, that’s for sleep and sex only.
Make it a red light district.
