5 Tips to Prevent Eye Strain from Computers

by Health Tips

These days almost everyone works on a computer. Whether you sit at one all day long or just use it from time to time, computer screens can hurt your eyes if not adjusted properly. Here are 6 tips for relieving computer eye strain that may have you tearing up in a good way!
  1. Lighting is Key. If you get home with tired eyes each night, you might need to overhaul your lighting situation at the office. Bright light is a killer, and most offices should really have about half as much ambient lighting as they do to prevent unnecessary eye strain.
  1. Cut the Glare. Reflections on your monitor can take a toll on your eyes, as can glossy finishes on other surfaces like walls and desktops. An anti-glare screen overlay on your monitor might be a good idea to cut down on this strain.
  1. Ditch the 10-Year-Old Monitor. If your computer monitor isn’t a flat screen LCD, it’s time to upgrade. The costs have come way down and these newer monitors are much easier on your eyes.

  2. Optimize the Settings. This should probably be #1 on the list, as it is such an easy fix. Take five minutes to play with the screen settings on your monitor, adjusting for brightness, contrast and even the size of the text on screen (hold down CTRL and + or – keys).

  3. Give Your Eyes a Mini-Workout. Remember Jack LaLanne? He famously taught millions of Americans to do face exercises on his popular daytime television show. Turns out he was wise beyond his years, as exercising your eyes can help reduce strain. Blink often and take breaks from looking at your computer screen by looking away and focusing on distant objects for 20-30 seconds.
