Could I develop postpartum depression five months after my baby's birth?

I'm five months postpartum and still don't feel like myself. Can this be postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression (PPD) can occur any time during the year after you have your baby. Some experts think PPD can even pop up in the second year after having a baby. For some women, the symptoms of PPD emerge suddenly and early, alerting them soon after they give birth that something is terribly wrong. But for others, the onset can creep up in a way that leaves them wondering: What's wrong? Why do I feel so bad?

Some doctors will inform you mistakenly that having a baby just makes you feel this way, or that PPD can occur only in the first couple of weeks after childbirth. Remember this: You're often the best and most reliable judge of whether you're okay or not. If you think something's wrong, it probably is. Don't let guidelines set up by others, expectations placed on you by your family or yourself, or misguided advice discourage you from getting the help that you need. If you're five months postpartum and still not feeling well, it's time to have a professional evaluation. Ask your doctor to refer you to a therapist who specializes in treating women with depression. Once you get help with this, you may be surprised by how much better you feel.
