“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)
The nation has been taken over by the phenomenon that is known as American Idol. This competition places singers one against another to achieve a great prize at the end. The uniqueness of this competition is that the public is able to vote for their favorite contestant. So, the winner may not necessarily be the best singer but the person who is most liked by the voters.
When God gave the children of Israel the Ten Commandments, He was giving them direct laws about how to live their lives in order to honor Him. These laws are ingrained in the Christian faith today. The first thing that God outlined to them was that they should not have any other gods before Him.
The same holds true for us today. God should be the center of everything we do. Nothing should take God’s place in our life. During bible times, they would build statues and bow down to them. Today, people do worship other gods and give reverence to them. God is concerned with His children that worship other things in a way that only belongs to Him.
When God blesses us with material possessions we should understand that we worship the Creator and not the creation. God may not the favorite among the world but He is the best thing that has ever happened to us. His laws represent His love for us. He wanted to be in covenant with us and anytime that happens, the instructions must be outlined.
God places things on this earth for us to enjoy but never to be worshipped. Our worship is reserved for the one, true, and living God. We owe all to Him and our praise is not exempt from that. Keep things and people in their proper place, beneath the Father.
Father God, You know us better than we know ourselves. Thank you for blessing us in the natural realm and we promise to honor you with those gifts. Nothing and no one is above you. You sit high and look down low. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness and help us to use our things to bring glory to You. In the Matchless name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
Questions: Is there anything in your life today that needs to be returned to its rightful place? How will you keep God at the very top of your affections?
