Or How You Can Get Your Hands on $13,000,000 of Gold
According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the current title holder as the largest gold bullion bar (by weight) goes to a 250kg (550 lbs.) bar manufactured by Mitsubishi Materials’ Precious Metal Division in 2005 with dimensions as follows: the bottom of the bullion is 45.5cm(17.9″) x 22.5cm(8.86″), the top 38cm(15″) x 16cm(6.3″), and the height is 17cm(6.7″) and the gold purity is 999.9.
This bar is currently being kept at the Toi Kinzan Gold Mine Museum in Japan, located in the Shizuoka Prefecture. Having the largest bullion bar had become a matter of national pride, as Japan once had a 200kg bar listed as the world’s largest, only to pass on the title to Taiwan once the Taiwanese government minted a 220kg one. Thus, Mitsubishi decided to smelt the 250 kg bar to restore the title to Japan. At today’s current gold price per ounce of $1764, the bar contains more than $13,000,000 worth of gold. .
Back to my statement about how you can get your hands on $13,000,000. The Toi Kinzan museum allows you to actually touch the 250 kg gold bar. Just take a look at this Jenna in Japan blog entry on her trip to the museum. Scroll down aways to the picture of Jenna touching the bar.
Another image showing the bar’s size relative to a smaller, more commonly seen bullion bar can be found in this TechJapan Article announcing the behemoth’s production back in 2005. Mitsubishi is a leading supplier of gold and silver bullion.
