A Love Without Fine Print

Written by Clinton Tedja

You received without pay. Now give without pay.” Matthew 10:8

When I was little, random telemarketers used to always call our home phone; they had amazing offers of free holidays, free phones, free anything. I’d always be the one to yell across the house, “Mum! Free stuff!” And she’d always reply, “Nothing’s free.” When it comes to telemarketers, she was right.

We’re brought up in a culture where we work for everything. If you have something, you earned it. From kindergarten stickers to food on the table, everything is earned. And if anything is free, there’s almost always fine print – you know, that tiny list of terms and conditions hiding at the bottom of the adverts.

But mum was wrong about one thing…Jesus’ love has no fine print, no strings attached. He is the God of the universe yet He would humble Himself to wash our feet, to lift our weeping faces, to answer our every call, to pour out grace from His tears, to GIVE, GIVE, and GIVE more. He lived and died to GIVE us this gift. ? And here is the good news: Eternal life is free.

Unfortunately some of us have made church the place where we try to earn salvation. Our culture has twisted it into a works-based system. If we come every Sunday, sing the right songs, fit into Christian circles, take Communion, go home and avoid sin, we can earn our salvation. ? The whole point is that we can’t earn salvation. Jesus gave it to us, FREE. We’re meant to live in that freedom. We’re meant to live our lives in response to that free gift.

Thank you Father that when I received you, it was as simple as that…receiving you. Father, I receive the gift of your salvation. Thank you.

Question: Are you living in the freedom of salvation today?
