Owned or Loaned?

by Marilyn Ehle

Christian thoughts about GodThe Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15

Our car went into the garage for work so we were given a ‘loaner’ for use today. We have no title to this car, it’s not ours, it has only temporary usefulness for us. We are responsible to drive it safely and return it in good condition at the end of the day.

If only we looked at all the things in our lives as ‘loaners’. In many of our churches we regularly affirm belief in “God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.”

God allows us the privilege of caring for what He has entrusted to us, managers of what He has made ‘what He truly owns’ yet how easily we fall into the trap of believing that we are the rightful owners of ‘things visible and invisible’. We are tempted to jealously guard material goods with an ugly selfishness. Too often it is only when disasters like floods, fires or hurricanes snatch the material out of our grasp that we sorrowfully acknowledge the fact that our possessions truly are only ‘loaners’.

Father, thank you for the beautiful things in our home. Thank you for the privilege of managing what truly belongs to you. Help me be a generous and careful tender of all that truly belongs to you.
