The Skin I am In

Written by Linda McCutcheon

“Our earthly bodies, which die and decay, will be different when they are resurrected, for they will never die. Our bodies now disappoint us, but when they are raised, they will be full of glory.” (1 Corinthians 15: 42-43, NLT)
We live in our frame. We are all so different with bone structure, skin tone, height and weight all meshed together making us who we are.  While on earth, we try and take care of these earthly vessels. (Which we should!)  However, they don’t always cooperate.
I recently had major surgery.  I am very grateful for our amazing technology and gifted of surgeons, but it is unnatural to be poked and prodded.  Healing takes time.  I am not very patient and the worry bug gets to me.  As scripture says “our bodies now disappoint us”.  I wasn’t healing as quickly as I wanted.  I was frustrated and disappointed.

My dear friend who was dying and then was miraculously given a liver and kidney transplant sent me an email.  This is what she said regarding her life experience, “I finally got to the point where it was a total relaxation of body and mind, especially when there was absolutely nothing I could do – so it was all God.  There was no point in worrying – just gives more stress (and sore neck and back muscles)!”
Sometimes it is hard to fathom that we who have put our faith and trust in the God will one day be gloriously rescued to perfect existence.  God gives us HOPE for that in Heaven.  It says in these verses that our bodies, “will be different when they are resurrected, for they will never die..but when they are raised, they will be full of glory.  They will be weak now but when they are raised, they will be spiritual bodies.”
No more wheelchairs, canes, strong medications, wobbly knees, arthritis, cancer, bifocals or extra weight. The human list is endless.  Revelation 21:4 says “He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.”
As we begin our morning, we know that these human bodies will be one day glorified and be with God forever.  I have gained a new appreciation for the unique way our bodies are made. We need to respect and take care of them, knowing that we will still have issues and our bodies will one day say ‘enough’.   Because of our faith, we are guaranteed a glorified body in a glorified forever home.
As my friend likes to remind me, “God is good–all the time.”  He is. He will help us walk through our aches and pains with a promise of new health, new bodies, and a forever future. When we get discouraged with our physical bodies we can be encouraged because we have a promise to cling to.
Do you have that reassurance of trusting Him through your health issues here on earth?  Are you assured that when your body says ‘enough’, you will be in Heaven with a glorified body?  You can know for sure.
Father God, we are needy.  You have placed us here on this earth to enjoy it and take care of ourselves. Some of us struggle with health issues so we are asking for Your peace and Your comfort in this journey.  Thank you for providing a wonderful, forever place for us when our time is completed here. In Your All-Sufficient Name we pray,  Amen.
Question: Can you say, “God, You are Good—all the time”? Have there been seasons in your life when it was hard to say? How would you encourage a friend who is struggling to see the goodness of God?
